WLTP

WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure) was officially applied to new types of cars from September 2017. Since then, ICON has been working with automotive manufacturers on WLTP certification using iconCFD on CFD external aerodynamics simulation.

WLTP is a United Nations Global Technical Regulation (UN GTR) where standard methods are set to define:

  • car CO2 emissions
  • fuel consumptions
  • electric energy consumption
  • range of light duty vehicles

in a repeatable and reproducible manner.  A large amount of wind tunnel testing is required for such a certification process, and nowadays the CFD role is getting more important as it can accurately predict vehicle drag coefficient and help off-loading the need for experimental testing.
